ADJUSTMENTS, MODIFICATIONS AND VERBAL INSTRUCTIONS
TEACHING YOGA FOR SCOLIOSIS
WITH DEBORAH WOLK OF SAMAMKAYA YOGA NYC
Students with scoliosis have very specific needs with the nervous system, proprioceptive system and with pain patterns. One must avoid muddled information. Using prop set-ups, hand on adjustments and verbal instructions, Deborah Wolk will guide you in how to better teach your students with scoliosis.
This workshop is appropriate for all yoga teachers and for yoga students with scoliosis. This class is not recommended for brand new beginners to yoga. Students with scoliosis will serve as models for the course and will learn a great deal about their particular scoliosis. They should be prepared and willing to have their bodies looked at and talked about in detail.
FRIDAY EVENING - 6-9pm
SPINAL ANATOMY FOR SCOLIOSIS
• Essential background information to understand the weekend’s material in both observation and practice Friday evening will cover basic spinal anatomy and the anatomy and physiology of scoliosis.
SENSING THE BACK BODY AND USING THE BREATH: CONCAVITIES AND CONVEXITIES
The student with Scoliosis only comes into contact with their scoliosis through touch in the convexities. The sense of the concavities and the muscles there have atrophied and the familiarity of the convexities creates too much sensation and overuse. Learn how to see the scoliotic patterns and help your student to feel them.
ARMS AND LEGS: FROM THE PERIPHERY TO THE CORE
Scoliosis is often defined by low tone and/or hypermobility. Building strength in the limbs can only be found by addressing alignment issues created by compensation in the joints. The student with scoliosis lives in this misaligned environment and it is hard for them to see or sense compensation. Help your student to line up the limbs, develop strength there and use the arms and legs to support and lift the spine.
SUNDAY (Sunday morning will be in a studio with a rope wall and Iyengar props)
SUNDAY MORNING: LENGTH AND EXTENSION
Learn to use the props and the ropes to create more length in the spine and space in the joints. Tractioning the spine will help to straighten the curves and create space for the nerves so there is less pain in the body. We will be working with props and ropes in all the categories of poses. You will also learn to adapt some of the rope poses for home practice or practice in a non-Iyengar studio.
YOGA, SCOLIOSIS AND THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
The student with scoliosis may find herself disoriented with her teacher’s directions and hands-on adjustments. She may not be able to move in a linear way or find where she is in space. Reactions to these situations can range from dizziness and sweating to anger and frustration. How can we move students out of these patterns safely? What types of props or hands-on adjustments will help inform them where they are? In this session find out why this is happening and practice some of the basic techniques to balance and reeducate your student's nervous system and in turn bring more balance to her yoga practice.
