"Yoga must not be practiced to control the body : it is the opposite, it must bring freedom to the body, all the freedom it needs." — Vanda Scaravelli
The Living Spine : A Practice of Listening
A Two-Day Scaravelli-Inspired Yoga Workshop with Alexandra Sotiropoulou
Immersion into the subtle and transformative world of Yoga.
This workshop invites participants into an intelligent and deeply embodied exploration of movement, breath, gravity, and awareness. Inspired by the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli, the practice emphasizes freedom rather than force, sensitivity rather than performance, and an intimate relationship with the spine, the breath, and the ground beneath us.
Rather than approaching yoga as a system of shapes to achieve, we will explore how the body can gradually release unnecessary tension and rediscover natural movement, fluidity, and support from within.
Throughout the weekend, we will investigate :
* The relationship between gravity and lightness
* Awakening the spine through waves and spirals
* Releasing effort and unnecessary holding
The connection between awareness, breath and movement
Grounding and stability through the limbs
* Organic backbending and spinal extension
* Rest, silence, and embodied presence
The workshop is open to practitioners of all backgrounds who wish to deepen their understanding of the body and cultivate a more intuitive and inward approach to yoga. This is not a workshop about achieving advanced postures. It is an invitation to listen, feel, release, and rediscover the intelligence of the body.
PROGRAM
Saturday 16/01 - 10h - 12h30 : Gravity, Grounding & the Breath
We’ll begin by establishing a relationship with the ground. Through simple yet profound explorations, participants will investigate how yielding to gravity creates support, space, and lightness in the body. We will work with supine and standing positions, the feet, the pelvis, and the natural response of the body when unnecessary tension is released.
Themes :
Gravity and support
The intelligence of the feet and palms
Activating and releasing the hips and lower back
* Breath as a natural movement
* Spinal waves and spirals
* Standing postures approached from the inside
Saturday 16/01 - 14h - 16h30 : Softness, breath, and the unwinding of the spine
We will explore floor work and subtle movement, allowing the breath to guide movement rather than control it.
Themes:
* Releasing the diaphragm
* Organic spinal extension
* Twists and spirals
* Neck and shoulder freedom
* Resting into the breath
* Deep relaxation and awareness
Sunday 17/01 - 10h - 12h30 : Freedom, Integration & the Living Spine
The second day deepens the exploration of spinal freedom and integration. Participants will be guided through more dynamic asanas in a way that cultivate fluidity, responsiveness, and ease. We will investigate how the body moves when effort is reduced and attention becomes more refined.
Themes:
* Spinal awakening through movement
* Effortless strength
* Backbending without compression
* Integration of breath and movement
* Balance between grounding and expansion
* Stability and freedom in asana
Sunday 17/01 - 14h - 16h30 : Closing practice and integration
The final session focuses on sensitivity, presence, and carrying the principles of the practice into daily life.
Themes:
* Refining awareness
* Moving with less effort
* Continuity between practice and everyday life
